Fetal Heart Scan / Cardiac Scan

Cardiac Scan

The fetal cardiac scan, also known as a fetal echocardiogram, is a highly specialised ultrasound that examines your baby’s heart in detail. It allows us to assess the structure and function of the heart.
This scan is usually performed between 18 and 23 weeks of pregnancy, although it can be done earlier or later if needed.

Why should have a cardiac scan?

This scan may be recommended if:

  • The nuchal translucency is increased, or a heart abnormality was suspected at the routine nuchal, early anatomy or routine anomaly scan
  • There is a family history of congenital heart disease
  • You have certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, lupus or treated epilepsy.
  • You’re carrying a baby conceived via IVF, particularly ICSI
  • A genetic condition or chromosomal abnormality (e.g. Trisomy 21, 18 or 13) has been identified or is suspected
  • You’re carrying twins or a higher-order multiple pregnancy

Sometimes, it may be offered even if no risk factors are present, simply for reassurance.

When should I have a cardiac scan?

The scans are usually performed from 16 weeks of gestation but can be undertaken from as early as 13 weeks if necessary.

How is the cardiac scan performed ?

The scan is performed trans-abdominally which means over the tummy. It is carried out in a calm, quiet setting using high-resolution ultrasound equipment. It is completely safe and non-invasive for you and your baby.
Our specialist will carefully examine:

  • The size, shape, and position of the heart
  • The four chambers, valves, and major blood vessels
  • The rhythm and function of the heartbeat
  • Blood flow in and out of the heart using Doppler imaging

The appointment typically lasts 45 minutes to 1 hour, and we take time to explain what we see during the scan. Extensive counselling follows the scans, especially in case of any abnormalities or aberrations detected.

Who performs the scan?

At The Fetal Medicine Centre, your fetal cardiac scan will be carried out by Professor Julene Carvalho, who is a Consultant in Fetal and Paediatric Cardiology at the Royal Brompton Hospital, and holds an extensive training and experience in diagnosing even subtle heart conditions.

What happens if a problem is found?

If any concerns are identified, we will:

  • Discuss the findings with you in detail
  • Arrange a follow-up prenatal or postnatal scan
  • Offer genetic counselling or further tests if appropriate
  • Provide ongoing support and care throughout your pregnancy

Many heart conditions can be monitored safely during pregnancy and treated successfully after birth. We will work closely with you and your maternity team to ensure the best possible outcome for your baby.
